EEG Study Visits
A Glimpse Into Your Child’s Developing Brain

We’re so glad you’re here! Your family’s participation in the NURTURE Study at the Marcus Autism Center plays an essential role in helping us better understand early brain development. Through visits to our EEG lab, we're learning valuable insights about how infants grow, learn, and connect with the world around them. This website is designed just for you — to keep you informed, answer your questions, and support you throughout your family’s journey with us. Thank you for being a vital part of our research family!

EEG Overview

What is an "EEG"?

An EEG, or electroencephalogram, is a simple, safe test that measures electrical activity within the brain.

For this test, we’ll place a stretchy cap on your and your child’s head. The cap looks like a hair net (or spaghetti hat!) and has soft sponges soaked in salt water that help pick up signals from the brain. It may make your or your child’s hair a little wet, but there’s no gel, so there's no mess to clean up afterward.

You will stay with your child the entire time, and the session is quick. During the test, we will be looking at how your child's brain reacts to seeing or hearing their preferred caregiver. We hope to learn more about how your and your child’s brains work together during social interactions.

Parking for Study Visits

Free parking is available to you and your family on your immediate right after passing the official "Marcus Autism Center" sign from Briarcliff Rd. Spaces for expecting parents or designated handicapped spots will be available closest to the building entrance.

Meet the EEG Research Team

We’re excited for you to get to know the dedicated team behind the NURTURE Study! Our EEG team is here to support you and your family every step of the way.

Once you and your family check in at the front desk, you will be directed to take the elevator or stairs to the second floor. While on the second floor, you can stop by the front desk at that level to check in--this allows our research team to know you have arrived!

How do we do this?
During your visits, we’ll use a safe and gentle tool called EEG (electroencephalography) to measure brain activity. Both you and your baby will wear a special cap that looks like a soft hairnet. The cap has water-based sensors — no gels or messy products are used!

Here’s what the visit looks like:

  • Your baby will sit comfortably in a high chair.

  • You’ll sit right next to them, engaging in fun, play-based activities together — just like you would at home.

  • We’ll collect about 20 minutes of brain activity data during playtime, while the rest of the visit is dedicated to setup and making sure you’re both comfortable.

Each EEG session happens alongside your child’s clinical assessment and eye tracking, making the process smooth and convenient.
